Dr Ana Penteado, Honorary Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Notre Dame, School of Law, holds a PhD from Macquarie University, an LLM from the University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley Law School and an LLB from Mackenzie University, School of Law. Dr Penteado combines a hybrid academic experience and a professional legal career spanning four jurisdictions with a concentration on international law, transnational intellectual property law and public policy applied to Indigenous Knowledge and new technologies. She has published on aspects of patentability involving drug discovery, COVID-19, compulsory licenses, drug development, and vaccine discovery in Uncertainty and intellectual property rights (2020). Other topics of interest to her are native flora protection and fair and just commercialisation via patentable subject matter for associated cultural assets. Dr Penteado has published in peer-reviewed journals and provided submissions to the Australian government on intellectual property issues. Her projects primarily involve public policy on intellectual property theory and practice, climate change and ecological metrics.

She has also focused her studies on multidisciplinary research involving environmental issues connected with Indigenous, tribal, and local communities in international law. She has concentrated her studies on climate change mitigation policies as a basic research topic to advance solutions for the first custodians of flora and fauna in Southeast Asia and support sustainable local policies to maintain and integrate Indigenous Knowledge systems. Lately, her academic research has focused on interdisciplinary studies related to Indigenous Knowledge for a collaborative mission across disciplines to promote novel public policies involving Indigenous, tribal, and local communities as active stakeholders in advance of social justice.  She is the editor of a forthcoming book on Indigenous Knowledge and Climate Change: An Environment Impact on Landscape and Communities, along with Dr Shambhu Chakrabarty and Dr Owais Hassan Shaikh, an upcoming publication by Springer Nature.  

She has been a member of the Intellectual Property and Innovation Researchers of Asia (IPIRA) for the past five years. Currently, she is researching ecological metrics and sustainability, artificial intelligence and philosophy of law. Dr Penteado is on sabbatical at the School of Law at the University of Engineering and Management in Kolkata. She is preparing book projects with Professor Shambhu Prasad Chakrabarty and fostering collaboration with other legal scholars in the university’s department of law and other institutions in the first trimester of 2024.  Last February, Dr Penteado lectured an intensive course on traditional knowledge for law students at the ICFAI University, School of Law, in Hyderabad. She is also a keynote speaker with Professor Shambhu Prasad Chakrabarty at the Institute of Business Management affiliated with Jadavpur University next March 2024. Her next projects are two books on historical and legal aspects of artificial intelligence in development. Another recently proposed textbook on Traditional Knowledge for 2025 to be co-authored with Professor Shambhu Prasad Chakrabarty is under wraps at the present time.
